The golf majors are some of the most exciting and prestigious events in not only golf but sport.
This year the British Open is being played at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club for the tenth time.
The British Open is better known as The Open Championship, and here are some basic facts for all those golf fans out there for this year’s event.
Royal Birkdale Golf Club
The Royal Birkdale Golf Club was founded in 1889 and is located at Southport, Merseyside North of Liverpool in the United Kingdom.
The Championship course is a Par 70 and measures 7173 yards. The front nine does not feature a Par five and is a par 34. The back nine is a par 36.
Previous winners at this location include Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johhny Miller, Tom Watson, Mark O’Meara, Peter Thomson, Ian Baker-Finch and the most recent was Padraig Harrington in 2008.
With so many good players around these days, there will be a lot of star golfers trying to win this prestigious event. Here are five of the top contenders.
The current world number one, Dustin Johnson is one of the favourites. Dustin did however, miss the cut at the US Open but has won 3 times this year on the PGA Tour. Has a big advantage with the distance he hits the ball and is a definite contender.
Has two majors next to his name, but would be keen to add the Open Championship to his record. Jordan has won two events this year and is always a solid contender in the majors.
John Rahm is one of the young in form golf guns. He is a long-hitting Spaniard and has an incredibly consistent short game. John has won on the US Tour this year and recently won the Irish Open. Can he hold his nerve this week at Royal Birkdale? We will find out this week.
Sergio is one of the most consistent ball strikers you will see and finally broke through for his first major victory this year by taking out the US Masters. He will be hoping to add a second major to his list at Royal Birkdale.
Who could forget last years winner Henrik Stenson? Henrik and Phil Mickelson played some amazing golf last year in the final round, but Stenson came out on top. He has been a contender in many majors before and will be hoping to go back to back in the British Open of 2017.
Other in form players to consider for the 2017 Open Championship are Tommy Fleetwood, who has finished in the top 10 of each event he has teed it up in in the last four weeks. Long Hitting 2017 US Open Champion Brooks Koepka will be a solid contender. No Englishmen has ever won at Royal Birkdale and Justin Rose and Ian Poulter will be looking to change that. They both have been in pretty good form in recent weeks.
Last time at Royal Birkdale
The last time the British Open was held at Royal Birkdale was in 2008 and was won by Irelands Padraig Harrington.
It was a famous and memorable event, particularly for Australians who watched Greg Norman lead after three rounds. Norman is a two-time winner of the British Open, but unfortunately, he couldn’t hold his nerve, and Padraig Harrington managed to come out on top.
Harrington fired a final round 69 to finish four shots ahead of Englishmen Ian Poulter.
