When life gets hectic, and squeezing in a golf game is a cherished escape, having forgiving irons can truly transform your experience on the course. Juggling a busy schedule often means missing out on the hours of practice the pros enjoy, but that shouldn’t mean compromising on the joy of the game.
In my journey of selling golf equipment, I’ve come across the common desire for clubs that make the game more enjoyable without the need for endless practice sessions. If consistency is a bit of a challenge for you, then this review of the Callaway Big Bertha Irons is definitely worth your attention.
Callaway has long been a trailblazer in the realm of Game Improvement Golf Irons, and the Big Bertha irons are no exception. Designed to simplify the game for players like you who may not have hours to spare on the range, these irons are a game-changer.
Enter the new Callaway Big Bertha Golf Set, the OS Model (Oversize). Let me spare you the technical jargon, but trust me, the technological features packed into these clubs are the secret sauce that makes them not just easy to use but arguably the most forgiving golf irons for high handicaps on the market. Get ready to elevate your game effortlessly.
The Callaway Big Bertha Irons are a line of golf irons produced by Callaway Golf, a renowned manufacturer of golf equipment. The Big Bertha name has been associated with Callaway’s game-improvement clubs for many years, and the Big Bertha Irons continue that tradition by offering a combination of forgiveness, distance, and playability.
Callaway Big Bertha Iron Features
New EXO-CAGE Technology
This is the newest technology used in these new Callaway Golf irons. The EXO-CAGE technology is the lightest and stiffest way to construct the back of the body of the clubhead. This forces the face to behave a little differently and will give the face more flexibility, which will increase distance. It allows more weight to be strategically placed to increase the overall forgiveness off these super game improvement irons.
The purpose of the EXO Cage is to enhance stability, forgiveness, and performance by optimizing weight distribution within the clubhead.
By incorporating the EXO Cage, Callaway can redistribute weight in the clubhead to achieve desired performance characteristics. This redistribution can help optimize the center of gravity (CG) and moment of inertia (MOI), leading to enhanced forgiveness, better control, and improved energy transfer upon impact.
360 Speed Cup Face
The 360 Speed Face cup technology features an ultra-thin edge around the face which flexes and releases better at impact. The ball speed will increase on centred and off centred hits helping this create the most forgiving iron set on the market.
This is a piece of technology that is used in most of the Callaway Fairway Woods and has really worked in some of the previous and current model Callaway iron sets. This is a big reason why these irons are fantastic in terms of distance and forgiveness.
The Big Bertha Irons incorporate Callaway’s 360 Face Cup Technology, which involves a flexible face that promotes faster ball speeds across a larger area of the face. This helps golfers achieve greater distance and forgiveness on shots struck with varying levels of accuracy.
Tungsten Loaded Standing Wave
A piece of Tungsten in a wave shape is used to lower the centre of gravity. The wave shape concentrates more weight near each end of the head for more forgiveness on shots that are hit closer to the heel or the toe. The lower centre of gravity will promote an easy to launch golf club.
Progressive Centre of Gravity
The centre of gravity position will move lower from the highest lofted club to the lower lofted club. A lower centre of gravity in the longer irons will make the ball easier to launch in the air. The higher centre of gravity in the shorter irons will promote a more controlled lower ball flight and more spin. This is all achieved with the tungsten weighting which is strategically positioned to promote the optimum ball flight for the golfer.
Targeted at Which Golfer?
The Callaway Big Bertha Irons Set are a fantastic iron if you don’t like practicing or a beginner. Consider these if you simply want to make the game as easy as possible for yourself and are after a set of the best game improvement irons ever.
The distance that can be achieved with these irons top rated game improvement irons is incredible and the feel is second to none.
They are more targeted at the higher handicaps but are fantastic for mis-hits and also making the game easier.
Please remember that the club will not do all the work for you, and you will have to do some practice, but the game will certainly be a lot easier with clubs like these. They have a fantastic hybrid feel to them and are incredibly easy to use.
The following video will provide a little more information for you.
Conclusion
So if you want a golf club that is a super game improvement club, and also want quality, then this is the absolute best golf irons option on the market today.
The main difference between this and the previous model is the larger head and the EXO-CAGE technology.
Golfers that try the demos cannot believe how much farther they hit their 7 iron with this compared to their current set. Distance and direction are a hot commodity when you are starting out in golf or are struggling with consistency. The Callaway Big Bertha Irons will definitely make the game easier for you if you struggle with your irons.
You can purchase these irons as a 4 to SW setup, and a gap wedge is also available.
The shafts available in this set are a lightweight steel option and also graphite for the slightly below average swing speeds. A firmer low torque steel option is also available for the golfer with a slightly faster swing speed.
A similar Big Bertha Hybrid is also available if you prefer them as an option for a three or four iron replacement.
If you feel that you are a bit past being a beginner or high handicapper and want to check out some other irons that would award some better ball striking have a look at the Callaway Steelhead XR irons or the Callaway Apex Pro Irons.

Very nice article on big bertha irons, most of us who are passionate about a hobby wants to become the best of our ability and have the best equipment we can afford.
How is the cost of this equipment for someone just starting golfing, would a beginner be better to invest in the better equipment or go with a less expensive set until they are sure they are going to keep pursuing this hobby?
Hi Jeffery
I appreciate your comments.
A beginner would best do like you said, and get themselves a cheaper decent beginners golf set. The cost really isn’ttoo much, and you can actually purchase a decent set for under $300.

Golfing has always been a dream for me. I grew up watching my dad and uncles play. I never got the chance to for personal reasons. But now I’m up for it and looking to find all the information I can on the best golf clubs. I love the name of this one. I just may give it a go. Awesome review and the video was the icing on the cake.

Hey Mate
I’m the novice golfer but I always freak my mates who are serious players..and beat or equal their scores when I play with them.
You got some serious sticks going on and I’m going to share your website with them so they always have a chance to beat me. When I get serious I will definitely be purchasing the best of the best that you offer here.
The green feels closer already.

Hi Paul
I appreciate your comments.
Yes, there is nothing worse than one of your mates who plays less and doesn’t practice, having a lower score than you on the odd occasion. Callaway golf clubs are fantastic, and they have a range of sets available for golfers of all ability levels.

I am getting back into golf after not playing for many years so I guess my ability level will be similar to a beginner.
Do these irons only suit beginners or will they still be good as my ability progresses?
I currently have a set of irons that were handed down from my dad but I am sure I would develop a lot more with a set designed for me personally
Hi Craig
The Callaway Big Bertha Irons are a set of game improvement irons that provide great distance and excellent forgiveness on mis hits. They would be great to make the game of golf easier for a beginner, but are also targeted at experienced golfers with a higher handicap. If you have played a bit of golf before and have no trouble getting the ball in the air then click the following link for a decent alternate https://basicgolfer.com/callaway-steelhead-irons-r…
I hope you get out for a game soon.

I’m a guy who thinks of Golf as a Sport that takes “10 years to get good at it !” It appears that your products, the Callaway Big Bertha OS Irons can help me cut that down to about “5 years ?” For this most frustrating of Sports around anywhere, I can’t wait to give a “Big Bertha” a try. As a beginner, this truly looks like it could give you more distance, which is never a bad thing in Golf !
Hi Rico
The Callaway Big Bertha OS Irons are what they would call a Super Game Improvement iron. These clubs are very easy to use and ideal for golfers who don’t really have too much time to practice. If you are starting out in golf check out this post onBasic Golf Lessons for Beginners.

Chris
Hi, Chris. It goes without saying that within the last 10 – 12 years or so as the technology through research by various manufacturers has allowed even the novice golfer to have more success out on the course compared to what was available even back around the turn of this century, 2000.
As seen in the Callaway Big-Bertha irons that you featured in your review, the clubs provide a higher level of forgiveness if a “newbie” to the sport has not developed a grooved, repetitive swing free of mechanical issues.
You stated that the face of the irons allow for a ball not centered on the club to still stay somewhat relatively straight whereas irons back in the 1980s or 90s would not have provided such forgiveness. In those cases then, a mis-struck ball would have veered off wildly to the left or right into landing in the deep rough, into the woods lost forever, or into the middle of a pond resulting in that golfer having a situation that he/she did not want to have to face. That being something called a penalty stroke.
Yes, even the cost today of one Callaway hybrid iron, (priced at $249 on Amazon seen on the one re-direct link that you included) would probably have equaled the cost back in the early 1980s of an entire bag of clubs. But, the price would be worth it to a person truly serious about improving his/her game in the sport of golf!
Jeff
Hi Jeff
I appreciate your comments.
Yes, technology has certainly advanced significantly in the last 15 years. The Big Bertha OS Irons are a very forgiving set of golf clubs designed for golfers who don’t really have much time to practice. They are very durable and can certainly make the game easier.
My first set of golf clubs were a hand me down set of irons from the 70s or 80s. Any mishit shot was certainly felt with some jarring in the hands and arms. Even a lot of irons designed for better players are a lot easier to hit than some of the ones produced 20 odd years ago.

Wow these Big Bertha Callaway irons sound amazing. I do have a Big Bertha Driver and I do not know how I would play golf without it. So I can imagine how the irons play. Thank you for this review, it truly hits home with me being the avid golfer that I am.
Hi Bobbi
