  1. Great article regarding starter club sets. I like the choices in the review. I personally prefer Cobra and have recommended them to newbies. I think they are more forgiving than most clubs and provide amazing distance. Of course that distance can carry you further to the left or to the right. None of the sets can guarantee success and quality shots, but Cobra is as good as you will find from a starter set.

      I appreciate your comments.

Yes a forgiving easy to hit set of golf clubs is always the best way to start for a beginner. Some of the Cobra options are very decent. You are right, no golf club will ever guarantee a good shot because it is entirely up to the individual. Comapnaies have however, spent lots of money on research and design to make golf clubs as forgiving as possible which helps with consistency.

  2. hey I really like the options you’ve laid out, I’ve golf from time to time but never anything to serious and I’ve always considered getting a set of golf clubs at an exchange or just anywhere really.

Is there much difference between older clubs and newer ones?

Also I understand how the woods and irons works but no one has ever explained to me what a hybrid club is or why people use them.

Yes, more research has been done with newer clubs as opposed to the older ones. Golf clubs have changed significantly in the last 10 to 20 years in regards to technology.

A hybrid club is something in between a long iron and a fairway wood. They would normally replace a 2,3 or 4 iron, and feature a lower centre of gravity and a much larger sweet spot than a long iron. They are also easier to use and you will get more distance out of a hybrid golf club as opposed to a long iron. Most of the beginners game improvement sets will feature at least one or two hybrid clubs.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Thanks for this! I have rented clubs up til now. It’s good to get a short list of recommendations for full sets of clubs.
Just wondering, do the Wilson and Cobra sets you mention both come with bags like the other two?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hybrid club. I’ll have to check that out.

      Thanks for stopping by.

Yes, getting your own set of golf clubs works out a lot cheaper as opposed to renting them.

Both the Wilson and Cobra sets do come with bags as they are package sets.

A lot of golf sets will come with at least one hybrid club these days. They are a lot easier to hit than a long iron and will help with a little more distance.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

  5. Great post on starter sets. I definitely can feel the difference now between my starter set which were just a cheap set of Brosnan’s compared to my Callaway’s now. In saying that I don’t think having my Callaway’s when i began would have lowered my score at all.

For the real beginner looking at a set of clubs would you suggest a stiffer shaft selection when picking their first set? or would this depend on their individual swing?

    • Hi Corrie

      I appreciate your comments.

It would mainly depend on their individual swing. Starting out with a regular mid torque set of golf clubs is normally the best way to go for beginners. It takes a bit of time to develop the correct technique to achieve maximum clubhead speed for the individual. In Saying that though some guys are naturally stronger so the Callaway Strata Tour Set does come in a stiffer option.

      Happy golfing mate.

  6. Very good web page on buying beginner golf clubs. As an avid golfer, I agree with everything you mention on the buying of beginner sets. A lot of people believe you should start with an expensive set of clubs. I don’t. The better clubs should be for the more advanced player. After a beginner has been playing awhile and is no longer a novice would I recommend moving up to a more expensive set. I think a player would be better served to be playing a set on par with their skill level. Golf clubs are expensive and so is the game itself. Beginners need to keep that in mind and not be pressured into buying more expensive clubs until they are ready for them. Good job

Yes, beginners need not spend too much on golf clubs, but if they have the money then why not. A lot of the better golf manufacturers spend a lot of money on research and design. Lots of the golf clubs created these days are forgiving and targeted at specific golfers in terms of ability.

A package set as mentioned in the post will certainly do the job though.

      Cheers
