Callaway Steelhead XR Irons

The Callaway Steelhead XR irons are a cast cavity back golf iron. They feature some fantastic technology, which has been researched and tested to help benefit the golfer that is looking for consistent distance and performance with their golf irons.

The Steelhead XR Irons are designed to be extremely forgiving, which is beneficial for golfers, especially beginners or those with higher handicaps. The irons feature a larger clubhead with a low and deep center of gravity (CG), resulting in a higher moment of inertia (MOI). This design helps to maintain ball speed and stability on off-center hits, providing better distance and accuracy.

Callaway has gone back to a design that looks similar to the first X series iron that came out in the early 2000’s, which was the very popular Callaway X14 Steelhead iron model.

Here are some of the newer technological features of the Callaway Steelhead XR Golf Iron.

Features

360 Face Cup Technology

This bit of technology is used in the Callaway Woods and works really well to create a club that will give you one of the best options in terms of distance and forgiveness on a game improvement iron.

The irons feature a 360 Face Cup technology, which promotes faster ball speeds across the entire face, even on mis-hits. The face cup design allows for more flexibility, resulting in increased energy transfer and enhanced distance.

It works by creating an ultra-thin edge around the face, which flexes and releases a lot better at impact. It basically means that the face will flex at impact creating a trampoline-like effect, which will provide fantastic distance in these Callaway golf irons.

Polyurethane Layer

There is a steel infused Polyurethane Layer on these Callaway Steelhead irons that will help reduce vibration at impact. This sits in the lower part of the head, which helps with launch characteristics. A mis-hit will not be as severe, and not feel as bad with this added technology, making it one of the best game improvement irons on the market.

The polyurethane layer helps improve the overall sound and feel of the club, contributing to a more satisfying and responsive sensation for golfers.

Hollow Bore Through Hosel

This basically means that the club has a feature known as a short straight hollow hosel. It saves weight in the hosel area to move the centre of gravity in the middle of the clubhead for enhanced launch, which will move progressively throughout the set.

This is a piece of technology that has worked fantastically with some of the previous model XR Irons.

The hollow bore through hosel design allows for weight savings in the hosel area. By removing material from the hosel and creating a hollow space, club manufacturers can redistribute that saved weight to other areas of the clubhead, typically lower and deeper in the clubhead. This redistribution helps to lower the center of gravity (CG) and improve the forgiveness and stability of the club.

Lowering the center of gravity in an iron or wedge can lead to benefits such as higher launch angles, increased forgiveness, and improved ball flight.

The Callaway XR iron also features a lower blade length from heel to toe, which helps create that more centred centre of gravity location.

Targeted at Which Golfer?

The Steelhead XR irons are targeted at the golfer who has the ability but prefers some extra distance and forgiveness in their irons.

The Steelhead Irons would suit an intermediate mid handicap player or even a beginner.

Callaway is known for producing high-quality golf clubs, and the Steelhead XR Irons are no exception. They are built to be durable and withstand regular use, ensuring that you can enjoy them for a long time.

They are easy to shape compared to the Big Bertha Model and would be an ideal option to take your game to the next level.

Maybe you have a set of the previous X14 Callaway irons and are after something new, but similar. These Steelhead XR irons would be a fantastic option for you. They feel great off the face, and the distance that can be achieved through the tested technology is lengthy.

Companies design golf clubs to make them as forgiving as they possibly can for a specifically targeted golfer.

Conclusion

The new Callaway Steelhead iron set are an improvement from the previous model with a more traditional look.

The 360 Speed Cup Face has been improved with a lightweight thinner perimeter, that will increase ball speed at impact. The Hollow Bore Through Hosel is back to get that COG location back in the centre of the clubface. There are a few subtle improvements on the Callaway Steelhead XR iron, which might be enough to lower your scores ever so slightly.

The Callaway XR Steelhead irons are available in left and right-handed starting from a 3 iron, all the way up to a lob wedge option. They come with the option of a lightweight well-performing steel shaft, or a graphite shaft for the slightly below average swing speed golfer. 1. Hello

Steelhead irons do appear to be high quality golf clubs, do they make these for left handed people?

If they do make left handed golf equipment, do you have any idea how much more these would cost than the right handed golf equipment?

Been thinking about starting to golf but cant find any equipment locally for left handed golfers, never been golfing but it looks challenging and a good hobby.

Yes, the new Callaway Steelhead XR Golf Clubs are available in Left and Right Handed specs. Left handed golf equipment will cost the same as right hand golf equipment in the same model.

      I appreciate your comments.

      Cheers

  2. There is a lot of good information, as a beginning golfer with limited money if I chose to buy one club at a time is there a chart or list that could assist me in this? For example do I want a one wood or a three wood first. Am I better off to get a putter and maybe an iron or two and get comfortable with a particular brand before investing in an entire set?

    • Hi Randy

      Thanks for your comments.

It all depends on whether you will be playing golf, or just hitting golf balls at the driving range. If you are just starting and only want to practice on the driving range then one or two clubs will do the job. If you are looking at playing golf then a full set is the best option and will save you money in the long run. These Callaway Steelhead Irons are a higher price point, but check out my post on Best Golf Clubs for Beginners to some ideas at a lower price point.

      Any questions, let me know

  3. Hi there, Some excellent information available on your website. As a golfer just starting out with not a lot of money to spend, do you offer any advice / lists on what to choose? I am not sure which club to start with and would like a steer before committing too much money. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Chris

  4. Great review. I’ve used Callaway clubs before and they’ve always felt solid when I hit them right. Glad you mentioned these new ones are forgiving since I can use all the help I can get. When choosing a shaft Is there a benefit to using steel or graphite? Which would be better for the average weekend type golfer?

      Thanks for stopping by.

Choosing a steel or graphite shaft really all depends on clubhead speed. Graphite shafts are more designed for the slower swing speeds. If you have no problem generating clubhead speed, and can hit the ball a decent distance, then steel shafts are a great option. 5. Hey there. My golf clubs are from the 1970’s and I’ve been thinking about getting a new set. I came across your page and see a lot of good information here that I can use in picking my new clubs. Irons are definitely important for me because I play a lot of PAR 3 golf in the afternoons and I only take my irons. Great info. 🙂

  6. Hi there great post.

I play with XR irons and love the 360 cup face. The miss hits go a good distance compared to other clubs but love the middle of course.
Im not ready for an upgrade myself but if they are anything like the XR then I highly recommend as like you have said they are very forgiving.
